Sea Foam: Bubbly Blur of Organic Ocean Matter

The surf is like a powerful blender when the ocean is agitated by waves and wind…

Obscure particles in the saltwater… dissolved salts, proteins, fats, dead algae, and an intricate mixture of organic matter…

are vigorously churned to form small bubbles on the surface of the waves.

In this way… a blur of organic matter is blended to form sea foam.

Usually, sea foam is an indicator of a productive ocean ecosystem. Unhealthy sea foam typically results only when large harmful algal blooms decay near shore.

  1. Great shots, Jane. I have to say that some ‘sea foam’ looks quite unpleasant. Not something to let the kids paddle in!

  2. Thanks for some nice pics of the sea plus interesting facts which I have to admit I’d never thought much about,

  3. I hadn’t thought about that aspect of a photo, Janet. The blur of the sound of the surf is one of my favorites. Whenever we come home from camping at the beach, it takes a couple of nights to readjust to the “quiet!”

  4. You’re welcome, Maamej. I didn’t know what formed the foam either until I looked through my photos and decided that the sea foam shot might be an intriguing subject for this week’s challenge. 😉

  5. I love the sound of water and when we’re in Wyoming, I love to ride by a creek. I’ve taken to finding stations on my laptop that play nature sounds and have them as background sometimes when I’m at home.
