We were enjoying a conversation on our deck and happened to look up. That was the moment we noticed a faint rainbow ring around the sun… oh how beautiful! Have you ever seen one? It is a Sun Halo. The colors of the rainbow are delicately muted by tiny ice crystals high in the atmosphere.
A Sun halo is caused by the refraction, reflection, and dispersion of light through ice particles suspended within thin, wispy, high altitude cirrus or cirrostratus clouds. As light passes through these hexagon-shaped ice crystals, it is bent at a 22° angle, creating a circular halo around the Sun.(Explanation cut from: Farmers Almanac)
