The purpose of this assignment was to create tack sharp wildlife photo. The goal was to practice using very fast shutter speed to stop action and avoid camera shake. Large aperture provides light needed and potential for creating background blur to isolate the subject.
A hungry Great Blue Heron was the subject. These birds are actually very still until prey is spotted; then things go pretty fast. In this case, a vole was spotted, grabbed, and swallowed. My first photo of the grab is not as sharp as I would have liked. It’s a surprise when the heron first lunges after being almost statue-like. Once I locked on, I think the focus improved. (Note- I tried to stay focused on the eye as best as possible.)
